All the coloring tools

I think the colored pencils were spared.  Everything else was drafted to make this card from Stampin' Up!'s Elements of Style set.  The hummingbird is stamped in Versamark and chalked with Rose Red, Garden Green and a little Old Olive chalks.  Then I stamped the flowers in Staz-on and colored first with watercolor crayons.  I wasn't getting enough color variation so I added some marker and went over with a blender pen.  I'd never tried that before - adding the marker over top of watercolor crayons but I loved the effect.  The marker ink stays wet and you can really blend it in good - a little goes a long way.

For the background, I used Ranger Distress inks in Mahogony, Tea Dye and Rose but that gave me too much orange.  So then I pulled out the chalks again and added a little Rose Red over the slightly still damp background.  Finally I used the Tea Dye to stamp the flourish.  Whew!  For me this is a lot of coloring but I love how it turned out.

Thanks for visiting today!  A new month is upon us with lots of challenges so I hope to get in some scrapbooking this weekend.  Oh and I'm tickled; one of my Two Peas entries was a  random draw for a prize!  Love it when the mail man brings a treat.

TIPsy Tuesday - Coloring Perfect Pearls

In the pink again!  This time it is for the Splitcoast stampers weekly color challenge.  It has been awhile since I did one of those.  The colors are Melon Mambo, Crumb Cake (kraft) and Soft Suede.  Since I'm not a neutral person that means a lot of Melon Mambo.  I stretched it with a bit of shading.

The background was created by pressing my ink pad on my Ranger craft sheet and then spraying the ink with water before soaking the paper. Stampin' Up! Classic Ink pads work very much like distress inks.

To give the flowers a little shine, I used some Perfect Pearls but the only color I have is white, so...

I mixed a drop of liquid pearls from Ranger and a drop of Rose Red Craft Ink (I don't have Melon Mambo ink refill) and then painted it on the center of the flowers.  It gives a nice little glisten effect.

Here is another version of the card.  Thanks for visiting today!  Hope the rest of your week is great. If you are in the US, how are you planning to celebrate the 4th of July?  We haven't decided here - no big trip or anything just something around the house.  Do you have a tradition?

One Summer Day

Saturday, I strolled around the yard with my camera and snapped what was in bloom and how some things like Lenny's volunteer cantaloupes were coming along.  Then I printed them in these itty bitty size for the Two Peas Snap and Scrap your summer challenge to use small photos.  So not my norm!

My only regret is that I had one more photo I printed and planned to use in the corner and then decided on a different arrangement with the flower.  I had no room for it and it was my favorite!  Oh well, maybe I'll use it in full size on another layout sometime.

Project Note:

The sun is stamped with paint and then I used a marker to outline it.

The flower and Summer are cut with SCAL and the Cricut.  The flower is an image from the built in images in Photoshop Elements.

I know I've been doing a lot of scrapbook pages lately.  I do have some cards made to post. I just needed to get these pages in before the challenge deadlines.

Have you had your camera busy these summer days?  Thanks for visiting today!

Wonderland

I wanted to scrap this photo of us at the beach and Shimelle's sketch of the week this week was perfect.  The photo also went great with a Pink Paislee 365 Degree 6x6 paper pad and embellishments making this layout work for Scrapbooker's Anonymous challenge to use at least 4 sheets from a mini paper pad on a layout.  Check.  Finally, I used non-summer themed papers on a summery layout so it fits a Snap and Scrap your summer challenge at Two Peas - Double check.

The challenge was the journaling.  What else to say about the beach at Hilton Head?  It was breezy, It was sunny, it was our last night there, we don't want to leave (yawn).   Finally I realized that I don't go there by myself; I'd ask my husband his thoughts. The journaling is exactly what he said when he looked at the photo:

"Looks so perfect.

Me standing there holding you.

I wouldn't change a thing.

Wonderland."

And what he said when he saw the completed layout.  "Can we go back?"  Oh, I wish!

Project Notes:
Since this sketch was a real departure from my regular style - a lot of small pieces of paper, lots of white space and only one photo - I followed it very closely until the end when I added just a couple more embellishments.

For the background, I did Shimelle's method of flicking paint on the page before I added anything else.  It was fun, like being a child in a food fight.

I also used paint to distress the edge of the journaling block.  It took three tries before I got a color I liked.  That's the great thing about paint.  Since it is opaque, you can layer until you are happy.

Thanks for visiting!

An Ordinary Day (that wasn't supposed to be)

On the day after we returned from a two day trip to Georgia for a medical/dental consult that ended up with me in a new treatment for my ear, neck and shoulder pain, we did a lot of ordinary things like working and for Lenny, yardwork.  I had to have one of my new dental appliances adjusted by a local dentist and run errands in the afternoon.  We did take time to have lunch together and have one of Lenny's favorite recipes.  Later we watched Jeopardy and a Big Bang Theory rerun.  It was just an ordinary day... except that it was actually our 10th Wedding Anniversary!

It was probably good that I didn't have anything fancy planned since we needed a day to catch up.  Perhaps it was just right to spend our anniversary doing the same kinds of things we do all the time and things we enjoy doing together.

There was one thing I really wanted to do and that was a photo shoot, but I couldn't bring myself to even freshen my makeup at the end of the day.  We did our photo shoot on Sunday.  So later on I'll scrap those photos.

For the layout of this ordinary/special day, I used the sketch from June's Stretch Your Sketch class at 2P's.  I made my own embellishments with various ribbons and supplies I've had quite a long time.

The grid paper, paper clips, and faux Polaroid frames emphasize the everyday nature of the events.

The center of this embellishment is stamped with an Anna Griffin Hydrangea stamp to compliment the hydrangeas I picked for our table and that we used hydrangeas as the main flower for our wedding.

Here are the faux Polaroids I mentioned in this week's TIPsy Tuesday post (How To) .

Thanks for visiting on another ordinary day here in N.C.!

The card I hope I never send

I hope I never send this card to anyone.

When I was putting the trims on, I kept thinking "Who do I know that likes pink this much???"  I was trying to use up some ribbon I'd had in my stash way too long - can you tell? :-)  Anyway, the sentiment was selected just because it fit in the space.  It wasn't until I was coloring in the words that it dawned on me ... pink ... Live, Laugh, Love.  This is a card to send encouragement to someone fighting breast cancer.

I've known way too many of these woman in the last few years.  I guess it is a fact of getting older that there will be more people I know with life threatening illnesses.

I put this card in my general card box. I truly hope it gets crowded to the bottom, the trims mussed, the corners crinkled before I ever have a recipient for it.

TIPsy Tuesday - Faux Polaroids

Everything comes back in style eventually.  Polaroids have been popular in scrapbooking. If you have old Polaroid (Instamatic) photos you want to include on a scrapbook page, you should probably scan them and then print on photosafe paper for archival quality.  For me, I prefer the real thing.  My scrapbooks are really for me so if the photo degrades, I'm OK with it.  (I do scan them just in case and keep the image with my other digital photos.)

One trend in the industry is to make new photos look like Polaroids.  To create the Polaroid look, there are lots of stamps and digi images you can buy or you can just make your own as I did here:

  • Print photo on glossy paper at a little more than 3"x3" in size.
  • Cut a Polaroid like frame from heavy white cardstock.  Outside dimensions are 3 1/2" wide by 4 1/4" tall.
  • Cut a 3" square from the middle 1/4" down from the top and side edges.
  • I set mine up with SCAL software to cut on the Cricut.  You could cut with a craft knife.
  • If you want an aged look, curl the edges a little with your finger or add some very light distressing ink like Antique Linen by Ranger.
A layout using this image is coming along later in the week.

Thanks for stopping by!

SU! Catalog Review

Stampin' Up!'s Idea Book and Catalog for 2011-12 is out. I CASEd this card (almost identically) using the Fifth Avenue Floral set which is still available in the new catalog.  This year's CAT was not the massive change of last year when all the color families changed along with lots of other things.  Apparently some of last years' changes were not embraced as they have changed again.  Here's my take on the new catalog:

  • I like all of the new In-Colors.  In Colors are now for 2 years so the ones introduced in this catalog carry through the middle of 2013 and last year's In Colors are still good until July 2012.  Finally, someone realized we needed another purple!  Wisteria Wonder is a mid-tone grayish purple sort of lavendar, sort of not.  It looks pretty.
  • However, it is hard to tell as the color swatches are so very small.  They are using a garden theme throughout the catalog and while I love themes you have to be careful that your theme doesn't diminish your message.  The color swatches are shown as tiny flowers and leaves.  They are just not big enough to really get a good look.
  • 12x12 cardstock is back in packages of smooth only!!! And they are 12 sheets to the pack which is a much more realistic quantity for scrapbooking than the 20 sheets we had before.
  • Now if only I could get them to realize ribbon doesn't need to be sold in 10-15 yard rolls!  One very positive rollback on ribbon is having almost every color come in at least one ribbon.
  • I don't do children's cards; however, I thought the children's stamps were much improved in variety.
  • I am disappointed in most of the other new stamps.  I guess they just aren't to my taste.  So far I haven't found a single new set I want.  I do wish they would offer background stamps as unmounted red rubber.  Most of the time I turn over the background stamp to use it so I don't need the wood block at all.  At 17.95 + tax and shipping, they are almost $20 each.  Yikes!  I've bought a couple in the past but that is just too much.
  • One of the biggest changes is the hostess program.  You earn hostess dollars to apply to selected stamp sets and papers.  You get nicer sets and I think you can use the money towards other things in the catalog but I'm not sure.  There is a lot of hostess stuff to choose from so this may work.  It will be interesting to see how the change is received.
  • The projects in the catalog are some of the prettiest and most interesting they have ever done in my opinion.
  • The punches are displayed in a way so you can see much better what the image is and what punch is called what.
  • Simply Scrappin' kits are more general and less themed which I really like.  They have gone up $2 in price though.  I didn't notice other price increases though I've certainly not checked them all.
The catalog should be on-line July 1st or check with your demo about getting one.  They are great idea books as well as for purchasing product.

The card above is almost entirely Stampin' Up product except for the cardstock.  I think the one in the catalog is a new In Color.  I matched it pretty closely with Berry Sorbet from Papertrey Ink.

Happy Father's Day

My dad is about as hard to make a card for as he is to shop for.  His hobbies are traveling, shopping and mowing his grass.  He doesn't participate in any of the traditional guy things like golf, watching sports, hunting and fishing.  So I'm stamp-less when it comes to card stuff.  However, as long as I've had this little truck stamp and as many cards as I've made with it, I don't think I've ever done one for him.  (At least I hope not!)  He does have an ancient Ford truck that he loves.

His favorite colors are blue and yellow.  That is one of the fun things about card making is you can cater your card - in this case, the colors - the recipient.  As I wrote in his card, I'm a lucky girl to have grown up in his home and am a lucky woman to still have him in my life.

So far this week, we have celebrated one birthday, two anniversaries, and made a 2 day trip to Georgia to see a specialist for my TMJ and shoulder pain issues.  Wow!  With regular work that doesn't leave any time for crafting. Maybe this weekend, I hope.

Anyway, I pulled a couple of pages from our wedding album and my stepdaugther's pages to celebrate our anniversaries.  These are both the "toast to the future" pages.   I think we are all living out many of the good wishes from our toasts.

TIPsy Tuesday - United Front

Looking at this card, you might think this is a TIP on what NOT to do and it sort of is.  I wanted to make a collage type card but I wanted something that looked more cohesive than what I was getting.  Originally I had all these little circle designs placed on white cardstock and they looked even worse.   Just like in fashion, black is a great color for rescuing a color scheme gone wrong.  In my case, I just had too many bold colors competing for attention.  So the black backround helped but it needed something else.

If black worked for the background, why not for the final layer?  I'd planned to add buttons and brads of varying bright colors.  What worked was to use a black button in the center of each of my circle embellishments.  The buttons didn't have to be the same size or even the same shape.   They just had to be the same as the background to pull it together.

So if you have a time consuming card heading toward the trash, take another look and see if a neutral color can rescue your project.

Oh and here is one more card made with the leftovers - no red/rust, very little white and no black as it was busy but not too bad.  Also I used a scallop for the background of every circle which gave it more continuity.

Thanks for visiting today!

way UP there!

A few days ago there was a post one of the message boards asking if other scrapbookers looked up stuff in their old albums.  The question got a resounding "yes!"  I use ours like an almanac.  I wanted to do this page because it captured an around-the-house event but also to record how we got Lenny up on the roof without bending the guttering this time round. I'm sure we'll have to do this again sometime.

I think I've mentioned that my husband doesn't care for heights.  (My personal nemesis is water.  I'm not frightened, but I get seasick on most any sailing craft large or small.)  Climbing up on the roof to fix the television antennae was not Lenny's idea of a good time.  Even worse, we didn't know exactly what was wrong and it took 4 trips up there with trips in between to Radio Shack to finally get good reception again.

The page is for Two Peas Scrapbook Stamping challenge this month to stamp and color.  The little truck from Stampin' Up!'s Loads of Love's set is colored with watercolor crayons and markers.  I also used markers on the lettering and the grass and flowers.  Backing the real truck up to the roof squashed a few things. I like to do my coloring on watercolor paper for easier blending.

Thanks for your visit today!

Get well soon Butterfly

I CASEd the background idea for this card from Julie Ebersole's card (from her blog).  I like the rest of her card idea and might have to try that as well.

This doily set from My Mind's Eye is getting a lot of use.  The doilies are stamped in Versamark and embossed in white on Stampin' Up! Crumb Cake (formally kraft) cardstock.

I've had a quiet weekend mostly at home.  We did an install on Friday morning and I actually cleaned Friday afternoon which was nice to not have to mess with the rest of the weekend.  Lenny went to a local  Blues festival yesterday; I joined him for a couple of hours as that is about as long as I can sit still :-)  Today I've been crafting and have just pulled his upcoming birthday dessert from the oven.  It is another rhubarb treat, this time mixed with raspberries both of which he grew himself and picked just today.  Apparently raspberries have no shelf life.  I never knew anyone around her to grow them until he planted some.  Anyway I think we had better test this dessert out.  It may not have a long shelf life either!

MM Haul

It's all Judy's fault.

There I was in an area of a neighboring city I don't go into very often, visiting the library branch as it was the most convenient one to my hair stylist.  I was pulling out of the library parking lot when I passed this store called the Mighty Dollar.  And a little switch clicked.  A few months ago, my friend Judy called to say that she had been to the best dollar store.  They had all kinds of great scrapbooking stuff for just a dollar.  She used Jolie's Boutique die cuts as an example.  I'm not a big fan of those but apparently I filed away that little tidbit for the next thing I know, my van is parked and I'm on my way into the store.

They had a sign on the door advertising their name brand scrapbooking products.  So I told myself - $10 is your limit.  Well, if you counted the items in the photo above, you'd find 10 items - all $1 each!

They had K&Company, Making Memories (my weakness of the brands they had) and some Autumn Leaves stamps that remind me of products Nichol Magourik is using in her videos.  My husband estimated my items at $50 before I told him where I got them and I think that would be on the low side.  (Thank goodness he doesn't know what this stuff really costs!)

I might just find myself on that side of town again someday - you know if I get lost or need to visit that branch of the library or something...

Evening Bike Ride - 5 photos

Golfers aren't the only ones who appreciate a lush green lawn surrounded by lovely landscapes of palms, shrubs and lagoons filled with water birds.  Biking on the golf cart paths is one of our favorite ways to spend an evening on Hilton Head Island.  It is so peaceful and beautiful.  Biking is allowed after 7 on some of the courses.  We get to enjoy the courses this way since neither of us golfs.  This year on our ride we discovered a little island in the middle of one of the lagoons filled with white sea birds.

The layout is based on Shimelle's sketch for the 4x6 Photo Love class at Two Peas.  Four photos along the bottom plus one on the top on a two page spread give us five photos for month 5.

I did my own embellishments using some DSP I got recently from the clearance section at 2 P's.  I thought those little travel logos would come in handy. I punched 3 bikes out in different colors.  Each bike is layered with another punched circle and two die cut images from the Accent Essential's Cricut cartridge.  I was tempted to add some other embellishment but decided to stick close to the sketch and keep it simple.

TIPsy Tuesday - Watercolor Crayon Background

Here is an easy background created with watercolor crayons, a spritzer bottle filled with water and some watercolor paper.  This technique is similar to using distress inks but less messy.

For the card on top I used the rough side of the watercolor paper; the smooth side for the card below.  I got a much better embossed image on the lower card.  I also used a little Vintage Photo distress ink around the dried image on the lower card.

Watch at  YouTube

This is a fun technique to do as you never know quite how things will look until dry.  You can also repeat the process to add more color.

(Please ignore the white paint on my fingers.  That is from another project - a not-as-much-fun house painting project!)

We {heart] gardens

Whenever we are planning to go somewhere new, I always look up gardens we can visit.  In this case, I only had to look up the address.  I had heard about the Sarah P. Duke Gardens in Durham, NC for years.  Actually it was the main reason we included Durham on our short spring getaway.  The garden is lovely.  In late April, the azaleas were finishing off, the peonies hadn't quite put out yet, and the tulips were in full bloom.  My favorite part was the terrace garden, particularly as most of it was done in lavendar and purple.  I've heard of 'white' gardens but never a purple one!

Of course we had to have our little 'adventure.'  On the far right side of the photo collage is a picture that just looks like a shot up into the trees.  If you look very closely you will see an owl.  My husband had me believing I was seeing my first owl in the wild.  I forgot that owls are nocturnal!  It was a fake owl.  I guess they have some sort of pest they use the owl to scare off - or maybe it is just there to fool the tourist!

The layout is based on the sketch from May's Stretch Your Sketch class at Two Peas. May Class If you want to play along, you have until the 20th to do a layout based on Jen Gallacher's sketch.  I stretched the sketch by changing the large photo to a photo collage.

My biggest challenge was actually printing.  I wanted to take just a few minutes to get started on this project and print out the 4x6 photos one day.  I spent an hour getting two photos printed!  Ironically, Wal-mart called in the middle of my wrestling with my printer to tell me my latest photo order was in (those are in the next layout I'm doing.)  Sometimes I print things myself and sometimes I send them out.  Anyway, after several ink cartridge updates and reboots, I got them printed.  It was downhill and fun from there.

This layout could also be a scrap your stash layout as I used some really old My Mind's Eye paper I came across when cleaning out a drawer a few months ago.  It was just perfect in color. Also, I used a SCAL file I'd made up and only used once before for the lattice work.  The chipboard flowers are from some very old K&Company stash. Only one was the right color, so I pulled off the tops and inked and stamped my own finishes.  Finally, I got into my Pretties Kit from Stampin' Up!

The upper right corner needed a little light so I stamped the background using a distressing stamp from Stampin' Up! (Itty Bitty Backgrounds) that looks like a spritzer and some metallic white paint.

Speaking of SU!, they have some things on sale on the retired Accessories list.  I think the Hodgepodge Hardware is probably the best deal.  A new catalog comes out July 1st so the sale lasts until June 30 or until supplies last.

beach reboot

This year it was just us at Hilton Head Island beach going at my favorite time - late May.  The days were warm but not stifling; it is light very late in the evenings; the crowds haven't arrived - you can actually get a parking space at the Piggly Wiggly; you share the beach with older couples and families with cute toddlers.

Lenny spent most of his free time on his bike or napping.  I spent most of mine at the beach.  It is amazing how the consistent flow of waves and a cool breeze just wipes away everything else.  I walk a lot and think, dream, plan.  Often those plans don't go anywhere but it is fun to dream.  This year I kept a small notepad in my beach bag and jotted down ideas after my walks.  It was surprising how many things I would have forgotten just by the end of the week.  I know I won't do all these ideas but I liked having a record of some of my random thoughts.  I still remember one year a long, long time ago when I spent all week daydreaming about this catering business I wanted to start when I got home.  I didn't do that at all; eventually I started another business.  Yet, it was a fun creative exercise that was a wonderful break from the job I had at the time.

This year I thought about a lot more grounding things like getting back to the values that are most important to me and focusing on those each day.  Perhaps I'll art journal those later on.  For now, here is my page's journaling:

Sometimes I get up early and walk on the beach with Lenny.  We walk again in the evenings when the crowds have thinned and the sun is behind the trees.  I always spend most afternoons on the beach by myself.  I read, I walk, I think, I dream, I read some more, I plan I watch other people, I watch the children play in the surf.  I remember how I used to jump over the waves when I was a small child.  My feet love the feeling of firm sand underneath and cool water washing over them.  The breeze blows my hair carelessly.  My skin browns, my pains diminish, my life seems open with opportunity.  I feel no stress; I just am.  Walking by the ocean each year is essential.  It is how I
(reboot)

"my life" is cut on the Cricut in Blackjack font.  The letters were painted and sponged with some Rose Red craft ink around the edges.  I love the possibilities of undressed chipboard!

To balance the bottom layering of Basic Grey's Sweet Threads papers, I used a stitches stamp set for a little extra above the journaling.  Some of the lace was gathered for this flower.  Finally, I'm putting those KI Memories brads I've had forever to use.  I bought them to go with the Sweet Pea paper collection from SU! but they go great with this paper too.

This layout was one of the things sketched in my little notebook.  I wanted  to arrange my photos a little differently and use some binder clips.  Twine connects everything together.  I also got to 'spritz' the upper right corner of the page.
